May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun
And find your shoulder to light on,
To bring you luck, happiness and riches
Today, tomorrow and beyond.
~Irish Blessing
I forgot that I had taken these photos of the Monarch Butterfly.
This past Summer I was lucky enough to be able to document through photographs the metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we were able to transform from legs to wings like these beautiful insects?

The monarch caterpillar after attaching itself and preparing to begin it's metamorphosis.

In it's chrysalis. These little cocoons are a work of art with their thread of spun gold, each one is perfectly formed.
March 4th '09
The chrysalis after 3 and a half weeks. The butterfly is almost ready to emerge. I took this photo at 10:00am and by 2:00pm that day the butterfly had emerged.

Drying it's wings in the sun.
Like the butterfly,
I have the strength and the hope to believe
In time
I will emerge from my cocoon...
Transformed.

Beautiful pictures and poetry...
I remember being a child and watching this magic in the paddock next door...hundreds of them.. the green of the chrysalis was so jewelled. thanks fro taking me back for a minute..

Oh wow! Fantastic photographs!
Wow, what a treat for you to have discovered and captured this, amazing! Thanks for sharing it.
You are very lucky to have both witnessed and documented this wonderful transformation. Beautifully done, especially the last photo - love the background.

your photos are stunning! I think we do transform from legs to wings as we die, but only the few see it.
The Irish blessing is so lovely, and your Monarch butterfly sequence of photographs... how beautiful... One year when I was teaching first grade we hatched monarchs... it was just like this... my little students drew them and loved them and set them free while they danced like butterflies through the grass.... Thank you for reminding me of this beauty... Roxanne
You caputured the metamorphosis beautifully!
What amazing photos Azirca, you should send them to National Geographic.
Wonderful photos Azirca. They remind me of one of my favorite quotes: "There is nothing in a caterpillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly."
